“We had never heard of Burkett’s Lymphoma, but knew enough to be scared,” detailed three-year-old Emmie’s mother, as she reflects of the journey her family has had with her daughter’s illness. Emmie was diagnosed with Burkett’s Lymphoma in 2017 and began a long journey with several months of chemotherapy.
“As a family, we put up a good fight and met each challenge. It is hard to describe all we went through, but we can tell you when we turned the corner.” That turning point came with the first phone call from Make-A-Wish Wyoming.
Emmie loves butterflies and talked about them frequently. “She knew she didn’t like to be called a princess, but it was okay if you called her a butterfly,” explained Emmie’s mother. A butterfly room makeover quickly became the topic of discussion between Emmie and her family.
She careful picked out her favorite colors, incorporating these into every element of her butterfly room with the help of her wish coordinator, volunteers, and family members.
Emmie recently saw her heartfelt wish for a butterfly bedroom makeover turn into reality, thanks to local supporters. She loves to count the butterflies on the wall and ceiling -- and there are always 13 of them, because that's all the numbers Emmie knows! “The difference from hospital bed to butterfly bed has been amazing,” for Emmie. She entered her room for the first time and flashed a quick thumbs up before crawling onto her bed. In Emmie’s young life, “Make-A-Wish made a remarkable difference.”
